Our Phrag besseaes have been potted in #3 Diatomite for 1 1/2 years now (after trying several other inert substrates side by side with the #3 Diatomite giving the best results) on a circulating water table, in clay pots, in about 2.5 cm of water, maintained at about 150 PPM 15-5-15 plus 6Ca - 3Mg at a pH around 5.8. This system keeps them cool at the root zone even on our hottest summer days, which seems to be a critical factor in keeping them happy. This year we have had far more growth, better flowering and far more branching of the inflorescences. There may be better ways to grow these, but this is the best we have tried so far under our conditions.
