Ace's story
LSF Fortunate Son
Ace suffered a nearly fatal injury while playing in the pasture with his half brother in the summer of 2000. We arrived at the barn early that morning and found that Ace had taken down 3 fence posts of high tensile wire, which then wrapped around his right rear leg, and essentially 'degloved' the leg from the hock on down to the pastern. All the skin, muscle, and tendons were laying around his foot, shredded and bloody and dirty.(Imagine that a potato peeler had been used on his leg, and you get a better idea of the horrific nature of the injury).
Ace had walked nearly 100 yards to get to the gate, and his half brother,
with whom he had been playing, kept him company the entire way, and probably
encouraged Ace by his presence. Bob wrapped Ace's leg with what bandages
we had, and we trailered Ace to Cornell University. The prognosis was not
favorable, and even with immediate attention and repair to his leg, there
were no guarantees that he would ever be able to walk comfortably, or trot,
or be a normal horse. We looked at Ace: even with his leg in shreds, his
head was held high and proud as he surveyed the surroundings. There were
no thoughts of surrender in his mind, nor in ours, at that point. We decided
to proceed with whatever surgery was necessary, and trust that Ace would
pull through and gain some measure of recovery.
Although several surgeries were necessary and many trips required back
and forth to Cornell, Ace persevered, never once threatened his helpers,
and endured all the pain and the discomfort of a cast with bright eyes
and a healthy attitude. He suffered extensive scarring, lose of tendons
and muscle, and damage to his knees, since he carried most of his weight
on his front legs. After 3 years of recovery, Ace has regained his proud,
lofty trot that had left us breathless the week before his injury. This
spring, Ace's first 2 foals were born. Both chestnut fillies, he stamped
them with his perky tippy ears, beautiful head, correct shoulder, ample
hip and strong top line, intelligence and his great trot. We think that
Ace will be a great asset to the Morgan breed and while he will never see
the showring due to his injury, he is a champion in our hearts.

From his head to his feet, Ace has much to offer the descriminating breeder of Morgans, He has what has been described as an
'exotic' head, of nice length, with large jowls, tiny tippy ears, and a
dishy profile along with a very small muzzle. His eyes are large, well
shaped, widely set apart, and with a kindly look to them. He has a nice,
long neck and while he has never worn a jowl wrap his throatlatch is clean.
Along with exceptionally good shoulder angulation, he has an excellent topline and high tail set, and does not need to be artificially stretched to show it off. He carries his tail so high most people think he has worn a bustle---but he never has!
His legs and feet are good, despite the injuries to his hock and knees. A short back and good, long hip are also included in the overall package. His power trot has to be seen----he has tremendous drive off his hocks, along with suspension and trots nearly level in front barefoot!

LSF Fortunate Son with his dam in 1999
Bob and I are very proud of Ace, not only because of his great heart, beauty, outstanding movement, intelligence and good disposition, but we also believe in him as a stallion that has been bred to contribute all these good qualitites to the Morgan breed. His first four foals are pretty, correct, intelligent, athletic and unmistakably 'Morgan'.
I love this photograph of Ace, for it shows off his gorgeous head and tiny muzzle, beautifully laid back shoulder, long hip, and smooth conformation. To me, this is just about my ideal of a Morgan stallion, bred and built to be even tempered, strong, capable of performing a variety of tasks asked of him, and easy on the eyes. Although a young stallion, we feel he will pass these traits along to his offspring, as evidenced by the foals listed below (click to visit their webpages and see for yourself!)

background photo of LSF Fortunate Son late winter at the indoor arena 2004
(Equinox Benn Adam x Dumar Lady Love by Trophy)
I did take some of the distracting background out of above right photo with Photoshop, but 'Ace' himself is not 'retouched' in any way: he is as you see him here. While in this photo he appears to be behind at the knee, this was caused by carrying more of his weight on the left front leg to alleviate some of the pain from the injured right hind. This has actually corrected itself over time, with light excercise. He still does not have the normal muscling and topline that a stallion of his age should have, because of his inability to withstand sustained excercise.

SOLD! !

Even at this age, Ace thinks very highly of himself!

Ace at play, the indoor arena, February 2004; softer footing allows him to trot with less stress to the damaged rear leg: he sports remarkable and balanced drive off his hocks despite having a single tendon from hock to foot. Trotting, however, is still more difficult for him than a canter. Please note these images were taken from video in a dark arena during winter time.

Most of the photos that I take are impromtu-----I'll just happen to have the camera with me------and so most of the photos will not show our horses impreccably groomed and prefectly arranged, but I feel the camera, most of the time, captures the true essence of our Morgans regardless of how little time is spent is preparing for their closeups! On this day, we just led Ace out of his stall and said "come up" and clicked the shutter.....
What you see here is what you get ----nothing artificial has been added: no training, no chains, no shoes, no long feet,----just pure and natural, bred-in, barefoot TALENT!

The video to the left was shot at the indoor arena in the middle of winter, 2004, and due to low light conditions,..... towards the end of the video you can get a very clear idea of how Ace *can* trot when his leg is feeling good and the footing is soft.

and moving!
LSF Fortunate Son is an outcross, which means that the sire and dam do not have similar bloodlines. Phenotypically, the cross of the mare and stallion pictured below seemed to me to show great promise, and so in 1998 we bred 'Lucy' to Forevermore and got 'Ace'!
